Vadim Kosmatschof, born in 1938 in Russia, is one of Europe's most important object artists. His large-scale kinetic sculptures for public spaces use solar energy to create movement and light effects. In objects such as "Pulsating Gene" or "Urban Heart", Kosmatschof focuses on fundamental issues of the natural sciences and relates them to cosmological phenomena. His works are rooted in the technological experiments of the Russian avant-garde, and are the first to make use of the latest developments in solar energy research on a larger scale. Thus his oeuvre represents and important contribution to the current-day rapprochement of art and science in the sphere of urban development. This book shows a cross section of Kosmatschof's current projects and realised large-scale projects in Germany, Austria and Russia.
