Where We Live: The Fractured Art of British Housebuilding and How to Build the Homes We Need - Jonathan Glancey

In this timely and engaging account, architectural critic Jonathan Glancey examines the fragmented state of housebuilding across Britain, offering a clear-eyed assessment of how we arrived here—and how we might move forward. With themes that resonate strongly in Scotland, from land use and planning to quality of place and community, the book considers what meaningful, well-designed housing could be in the years ahead.

Drawing on decades of experience as a writer and commentator, Glancey explores the cultural, political, and economic forces that have shaped the homes we build, questioning prevailing models while pointing towards more thoughtful, humane alternatives. His reflections speak to architects, planners, and policymakers alike, as well as anyone concerned with the future of housing across the UK.

Jonathan Glancey is a journalist, author and broadcaster, best known as former Architecture and Design Correspondent for The Guardian and Architecture and Design Editor of The Independent. An Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a member of the Committee of International Architectural Critics, he has written widely on architecture, design and aviation. His previous books include Spitfire: The Biography, Concorde: The Rise and Fall of the Supersonic Airliner, V-Force: Britain’s Nuclear Bombers and the Cold War, Lost Buildings, and The Story of Architecture.
